Etymology: Acc. to Fraenkel Linga Posn. 2, 106 tabuising reshaping of νυκτερίς after μυκτήρ, μύξα, μύκητες a. o. ( ? ); this interpretation is not convincing. Latte believes the gloss is corrupt (which cannot be maintained). Fur. 122 compares μυγερός = νυκτικόραξ `long-eared owl' (Kyran. 29); so the word may be Pre-Greek.
